Because they tend to be very short – usually 155 characters or less – and appear in search engine results rather than on your website, meta descriptions are easily underestimated. Even some of the best online marketing experts and copywriters write them together at the last minute.

What is a meta description?

Simply put, a meta description describes a website in a few short sentences and is displayed to users in search engine results. Meta descriptions play an important role in search engine marketing and can increase traffic to your website if you use them correctly.

Meta descriptions are part of the so-called meta tags family. They are HTML elements defined in the <head> section of a web page. They are used to tell search engines and web browsers how to behave in relation to your web page.

To use meta descriptions to your advantage, there are a few universal rules you should follow.

When it comes to the meta descriptions you write, length matters. Meta descriptions can’t be too long because you can only use a limited number of characters. At the same time, you don’t want to write a meta description that is so short that it doesn’t effectively describe the web page it will make users visit.

Therefore, your meta descriptions should be as long as possible:

Maximum length: 155 characters (920 pixels)

Minimum length: 70 characters (430 pixels)

In most cases, these lengths translate well on almost all Yahoo, Bing, Google and DuckDuckGo devices. However, these meta description lengths are not a guarantee that search engines will display them. Ultimately, this decision is up to each search engine. More on this shortly.

But if you write meta descriptions within these length guidelines, you increase the likelihood that they will show up in search results when users search for your type of content.

However, the length of your meta description only matters if the content is good. The key to a good meta description is learning how to pack the most effective words into the few characters available.

Meta Description vs. SEO Description

Many search engine optimization (SEO) experts use the terms ” Meta Description” and “SEO Description” interchangeably because they mean the same thing. Meta descriptions are SEO descriptions.

Some also refer to the Meta Description of the home page as the SEO Description of the website and that of the other pages as the Meta Description of the page. In the end, both terms mean the same thing.

Every page on your website, including your homepage, should have a meta description that search engines (and potential visitors) can read.

The most important thing to keep in mind: Google doesn’t always display the meta description you provide. Bing does not either.

Depending on the search query, Google search results often show a direct answer to the question asked, quoted from your site’s page. Sometimes the search engines will also show a featured snippet or a random snippet of text from the article. This can be frustrating, but it highlights the importance of making sure your content is dense throughout.

If meta descriptions don’t always show up, is there any point in writing them at all? Yes, and here’s why.

Why meta descriptions are so important

There is an overwhelming amount of resources for pretty much any topic on the Internet. For every search query, searchers get hundreds of results, and most people want the most qualified experts available to answer their questions.

Google won’t rank your content directly based on how well your SEO description is written, but your meta description can indirectly affect your traffic and ranking, as we’ll see in a moment. Here are three reasons why meta descriptions are important:

  • Your meta description is basically your ad copy. It’s your 5-second pitch to readers. You’re promising to answer their questions by showing them you understand their pain point and telling them what you’re offering.
  • Pages with meta descriptions look tidier on the SERPs. It seems like a small thing, but it can hurt your brand and your click-through rate if your SERP snippet is cluttered and unhelpful. Your page will look more like a malware zone than a value center.
  • Even though there is no direct correlation between a good meta description and better search engine rankings, it still plays an important role in search engine optimization. Good meta descriptions indirectly improve page ranking and SEO through clicks. While Google doesn’t judge websites by how their descriptions sound, it does determine reputable websites by their click-through rate (CTR). Your CTR is the percentage of searchers who select your content in the SERPs. How do you get readers to click? With a catchy meta description. Higher CTR = better search engine rankings.

Bottom line: meta descriptions sell your article to readers who use search engines. They help your audience decide whether or not to read your article. They look better, and readers’ reactions to a good meta description show Google that your page is worth ranking.

While it’s true that Google sometimes just shows a random article snippet, without a polished meta description, Google will always show a random snippet of your article. Unfortunately, this may or may not be relevant to the reader. However, with a description, your article is always set to show up best on search engine results pages (SERPs).

Meta Description vs. Meta Tags: The most important differences

Meta descriptions are part of the meta tag family. Meta tags are HTML codes that are located in the source code of your website’s pages. This means that readers (or anyone else) viewing the page will not be able to see your meta tags unless they click “Show page source” when right-clicking.

Meta tags (short for metadata) point search engines crawling the page to specific areas of your page. This gives search engines an idea of the structure and content of your page. Here are some basic meta tags you should know about:

  • Page Title: This is where the title of your page is displayed.
  • Meta Description Tag: This is where your SEO description is placed.
  • Viewport: With this tag, your website tells Google how you want your pages to be displayed on a mobile device. Once Google sees meta tags, it knows that your site is mobile-friendly.
  • Robots: This tag tells your site’s crawling robots what to do with your page. For example, by specifying “follow” or “nofollow”, they can determine whether a link is worth ranking or not.

Are meta tags important for SEO? Yes, some of them are. For example, the title tag is responsible for how search engines present and rank your article. Robot-follow or nofollow tags are important for your domain ranking, as they tell search engines whether to trust (i.e. follow) links to your website or not.

How to create meta descriptions that gets clicks

When you’re creating your website or building blog, it may not be easy to write a meta description that brings the results you want. As with other skills, writing effective meta descriptions takes practice, experimentation, and testing.

You now know not to mess around with your meta description, but how do you write a great meta description that draws readers to your article?

We’ve got six points that will get you on the right track to creating a click-worthy meta description.

1. analyze your current content and how it is displayed on SERPs

Before you start creating your meta description, it’s helpful to see what your current content looks like on the SERPs. That way, you’ll know what you’re working with and what you need to change.

Some of your content may be ranking as featured snippets, in which case you should leave it as is in the meantime. On the other hand, for pages that don’t currently rank as high, it might be a good idea to add a meta description that grabs readers’ attention.

2. write for readers (and search engines)

, you can do both! And how? By being entertaining while making sure your keyword – or at least part of it – fits within the 2-3 sentences of your Meta Description. There is no need to mention the keyword unnecessarily often. This will only hurt your page’s rankings.

Instead, cater to the readers.

For users, your meta description often determines whether they click on your link or move on to the next link.

Some important things to avoid are:

  • Descriptions that are in all caps or all lowercase. It’s okay to mix in a few capital letters if you want to highlight certain keywords in your description. But never write a description in all caps or with a capital letter at the beginning of each word.
  • Special characters such as copyright symbols, asterisks, trademark symbols or the symbol of a registered trademark, etc. Search engines don’t seem to like it when they are included in meta descriptions, and often ignore published descriptions when these characters are used
  • Overuse of punctuation marks such as commas, hyphens, periods or whistles.

Instead, ask a funny question. Make a joke. Show them that you know what they need, and more importantly, that your article satisfies that need.

3. Use relevant keywords

Each of your web pages must have a meta description that describes exactly what users will find when they click on the page. Search engines often ignore meta descriptions that are not relevant to your content and publish their own meta description on the search results pages.

To prevent this from happening, you need to know what the most important keywords are on each of your pages. The prerequisite for this is proper keyword research and analysis.

Then you should query these keywords and check whether the meta descriptions you wrote are used by search engines or not.

If they are not used, you should rewrite your descriptions with relevant keywords.

Don’t forget that search engines will bold a user’s keywords in the URL, title and description of the displayed search results. Therefore, it’s very important that you use the most relevant keywords possible when writing your meta descriptions.

While this doesn’t necessarily have a direct impact on your website’s placement in search results, it still has a big impact. If a user sees the words they searched for in bold on the results page, they’re much more likely to click on the relevant link. And when they do, your CTR (click-through rate) goes up, and so does the overall ranking of your site.

This is because search engines consider high click-through rates as a strong indicator that a page is relevant to a particular search query.

4. keep the meta description concise and unique

Selling your long article or beloved product in less than 155 characters (920 pixels) can seem like an uphill battle, but it’s entirely possible – and important.

Search engines can only display a maximum of 155 characters. So if you write too much text, all your hard work will have been for nothing, because it will end up fragmented by futile ellipses.

You can try assigning a role to each sentence of the Meta Description. One to highlight the problem, one to highlight the solution of your article, and a short call to action. If you are clever enough, one sentence may even serve two functions.

5. add a call to action

A CTA tells readers what to do. You may think readers know exactly what to do with the link to your article in the SERPs, but that’s not always clear when readers are flooded with search results.

Make sure you don’t miss the CTA. CTAs such as “Learn more in this article,” “Call 123456789 for more information,” or “Shop directly on our website” make it clear what the reader should do.

When you’re done and almost satisfied with your meta description, review it with an analytics tool to make sure it meets all of your goals. A popular analysis tool is one of the best SEO WordPress plugins: RankMath*.
